June 25, 2014 General Membership Meeting Notes

posted May 30, 2014, 3:58 AM by North Tampa Arts League   [ updated Oct 23, 2014, 3:57 AM ]
We met at our usual venue at Compton Park Community Center, Tampa Palms, 16101 Compton Drive, Tampa, Florida from 7pm-9pm.
We unveiled our two 9-panel group projects. You can read about the project and get another look here. The panels will be displayed at the Grow Financial in Wesley Chapel. Carol reminds the current show participants that the art comes down on Friday, 6/27 between 10am and noon.

Harvey Berman gave us an update on NTAL's original art donation project to benefit Shriner's Hospital. Eight members joined Harvey for a tour of the facility. The theme has expanded from underwater subjects to include land-based animals too. Canvas wrapped or in a simple, black frame and ready to be hung. The deadline is July 21 when the group will present the art to the hospital at 1pm. Dave Beebe noted that NY based Art To Frames is an excellent source for frames. They make frames to order. Frames larger than 16x20 have plexi instead of glass. Repeat customers even get a 10% discount with code "Return".

John Henne announced that we expect to move into the new meeting facility at Compton Park in October. It was very considerate of Tampa Palms to build us a new Community Center in time for NTAL's 10th anniversary!

Past members Luis Rodriguez and Gloria Barreto-Rodriguez have moved back to Tampa and re-joined NTAL at our June meeting. Welcome back! Also, please welcome new member Margaret Ryan.

Our every-other-month members Show & Tell is an excellent way to showcase a style or technique that you would like to share with your fellow artists. This month's participants were:

  • Harv Berman brought in watercolor landscapes and talked about using masking fluid as a resist
  • Dore' Anderson showed us clay sculptures and a newly cast bronze
  • Patricia Beebe  featured florals in watercolor and talked about working on Yupo paper
  • Joan Garcia  shared major bragging rights with her newly published book cover art
  • Marie Schadt proved she doesn't always work in miniature
  • Anna Granina brought in a large commissioned piece of the Cass Street bridge and U.T.

Dorothy Banker has a show in Ybor City. You can read about it at Tampa Bay Online. She is hosting a reception on June 29 from 1-3pm. All are welcome!

Next month's speaker, Noah Deleddda, joined us as a guest this month. We are looking forward to his presentation on his unique sculptures.

Thanks to Steve Sparks for bringing the easels and lights and thanks to John Henne for providing the refreshments.
