It is 2016... Now What?

We have an entire year ahead of us. What shall we do with it as members of the North Tampa Arts League? How will we grow as an organization starting its 2nd decade? This  will be the main topic of our January general meeting.

Thanks to all who contributed their input to our first ever NTAL online member survey. The information we collected was key to forming plans for 2016. Here is a preview of some exciting changes already in place:

First, we'd like to let you know that we are putting the finishing touches on a cooperative partnership between NTAL and LEC (Life Enrichment Center). These plans will benefit members of both organizations as NTAL will continue to focus on professional development and LEC will continue to focus on skills development. LEC's Director, Maureen Murphy, has joined NTAL's board so expect many exciting announcements to come. NTAL members can now participate in LEC classes and events at the LEC member price!

Our Show and Tell meetings were very popular in the survey and we will continue that tradition. Our first New Year resolution was to be able to offer workshops and Show & Tell demonstrations (something we could never do at Compton Park)Many members also noted that our Compton Park location was too far to drive to. To satisfy both of these requests, we will host our general meeting at the Life Enrichment Center the second month of each quarter. These meetings will typically be our Show & Tell sessions with the added benefit that members can now actually demonstrate their favorite techniques live. We have to work out the details on when space is available but it looks like we will meet there on the 4th Thursday evening of the 2nd month of each quarter.

Quarter schedule recap, all meetings from 7pm - 9pm:
  • Month 1 - 4th Wednesday, Compton Park (Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct)
  • Month 2 - 4th Thursday, Life Enrichment Center (Feb, May, Aug, Nov)
  • Month 3 - 4th Wednesday, Compton Park (Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec)

We have the first and third month of each quarter to schedule speakers. Let us know if you have anyone in mind that we can schedule or any topic you'd like to see discussed. Last year we held workshops on getting your art online and copyright law. The top survey topics were art fundamentals, composition, color theory and photography. We are also looking to offer professional artist development programs this year.

Field trips will typically be scheduled on Friday mornings, Saturday mornings, Saturday afternoons and Sunday afternoons based on the most popular responses from the survey. Our Plain Aire events (sketching, painting and photography) will continue to be offered on Friday mornings. These events are free for all to attend. The LEC is also offering watercolor sketching outings the 2nd Saturday of each month.

We will also offer more local photography adventures this year for our shutterbug members as not every location is easel friendly. Suggestions?

There was a survey request to have outings to local museums and galleries. Coordinators are needed!

New leadership brings new ideas. Our annual board elections are held in March. We will discuss the duties and responsibilities of these positions so that you can decide if you wish to run. If you don't want to be on the board but you do want to make a positive difference, we have many opportunities for you.

Due to scheduled remodeling at the The New Tampa Regional Library10001 Cross Creek Boulevard Tampa, Florida 33647-2581,  the Artist on the Month program with NTAL has been suspended. We will advise membership if/when the program resumes.

The survey topic concerning our Hunters Green display noted that 6 months was too long of a commitment to hang art for many members. We can change the art out more frequently but we need 2 helpers to coordinate the shows  regardless of duration. We don't want to lose this high-profile venue.

We have 2 large scale member shows this year. Our annual members show at the Carrollwood Cultural Center will be hosted in May. We have also reserved gallery space at the Stirling Art Studios & Gallery in Dunedin for the month of October. We need 2 helpers to coordinate these events and many others to assist with art check-in, installation and take-down.

We are also working on plans for combined shows with NTAL and LEC members. Any ideas?

Even though it is early in the year, we can't help but smile thinking about last year's holiday party. It was a huge success and we hope to repeat that recipe this year.
